Highridge Medical announced it will launch the activL® lumbar disc later this year, expanding its motion preservation offerings beyond cervical discs. The company’s Mobi-C® cervical disc has long been a staple in disc replacement, though it has received mixed reviews from surgeons due to concerns about long-term outcomes and implant design limitations.

With activL, Highridge enters the lumbar disc market, aiming to provide a device designed to better mimic natural disc movement and reduce adjacent segment disease compared to fusion. However, lumbar disc replacement adoption in the U.S. has historically lagged due to reimbursement hurdles, training gaps, and questions about clinical benefit versus fusion.

“Highridge is positioning this as a strategic fit for its motion preservation portfolio, but it remains to be seen whether surgeons will embrace it given their experiences with Mobi-C and the broader challenges lumbar disc replacement faces,” noted one spine industry observer.

The company plans to leverage its existing surgeon education programs to drive uptake. Whether activL can overcome skepticism and grow beyond a niche indication will depend on long-term data, surgeon confidence, and payer acceptance.
