Early Life

Kingsley R. Chin was born on March 30, 1964, in Buff Bay, Portland, Jamaica, to Loleta Lucilda Blythe, a dressmaker who later worked as a supermarket clerk, and Kingsley Richard Chin, a gas station clerk who also changed records in jukeboxes. His father emigrated to England less than a year after Chin’s birth and did not provide support to him or his younger sister, born in August 1965.
Raised primarily by his mother, Chin credits these early experiences with instilling resilience, discipline, and ambition.

He attended Buff Bay Primary School and later Titchfield High School, where he excelled both academically and athletically. At age 15, he boarded with Titchfield headmaster Lloyd O. Chin, who mentored him during his final years of high school. Under soccer coach Donald Davis, Chin developed as a central striker, leading the 1983 DaCosta Cup season as top goal scorer and earning selection to Jamaica’s Junior National Soccer Team, where he competed internationally.

Chin enrolled at Columbia University in 1984 on a soccer-academic scholarship with financial aid. He worked part-time to support living expenses and returned home to Jamaica each summer.

Bachelor of Science, Columbia University School of Engineering (1989) – Electrical Engineering
Eta Kappa Nu Induction – National Electrical Engineering Honor Society
During his final year, Chin was elected Student Government President of the Senior Class (1988–1989) and delivered the commencement address, attended by his mother and sister who traveled from Jamaica.

He was also named Ivy League Soccer Player of the Year and completed a competitive summer internship at AT&T Bell Labs in Parsippany, New Jersey.
