Updated: Oct 3

In a small home in Buff Bay, Portland, Jamaica, a boy was born to a 16-year-old mother. His father left for London within a year, leaving her to raise him and his unborn sister with little but courage and faith. That boy carried her dreams, her resilience, and the name of his absent father: Kingsley Richard Chin.

In those earliest days, when life was hunger, absence, and uncertainty, a truth echoed in Buff Bay Son’s voice:

“Life is not fair.”

He would grow up barefoot in the streets and rivers of Buff Bay, playing football on rough fields, and sharing one room with his family. He would one day look back and realize that in every hardship, a voice was calling:

“Prove yourself.”

That voice was Buff Bay Son.

The First Angel Appears

At just 15 years old, opportunity arrived. Headmaster Mr. Lloyd O. Chin invited him to live under his roof so he could play football for Titchfield High School and continue excelling academically. Both football talent and strong grades opened the door to a scholarship at Columbia University in New York City.

It was the first lesson of destiny: prepare yourself, believe, and your angel will appear.

From the Ivy League to Leadership

At Columbia, he didn’t just study — he led. He became the first and only Black Senior Class President in the Ivy League’s 374-year history.

On the soccer field, he was voted Ivy League Player of the Year, proving he could excel in academics, athletics, and leadership at the highest level — a rare combination that defined his collegiate journey.

The boy from Buff Bay had proven himself again.

The voice urged him on:Go get it.”

Surgeon, Entrepreneur, Fighter

That call carried him through the halls of Harvard Medical SchoolHarvard Business SchoolColumbia Engineering, and the University of Pennsylvania, where he served as Director of Spine Surgery.

It followed him into operating rooms where he performed thousands of surgeries around the world, including on cricket legend Chris Gayle, helping him return to competition.

ree

It echoed in boardrooms, where he founded KIC Ventures, today recognized as the only Black-owned global private equity technology manufacturing company in the world.

Through every challenge, Buff Bay Son’s message remained:“Fight.”

Proving Himself in Business

ree

In 2005, he founded Kingsley Investment Company (KIC) as a private equity firm. By 2013, he expanded it into KIC Ventures, focusing on health technology investments that produce patented products for patients worldwide. Among its portfolio is AxioMed, creator of the revolutionary viscoelastic disc replacement — a game-changing technology for degenerative painful spinal discs.

He proved himself when Stryker, a Fortune 500 company, acquired MANTIS Inc., a portfolio company built from his vision, in a multimillion-dollar deal.

In Buff Bay Son’s words:Success — the Goal.”

Music With a Mission

As Dr. Chin, he authored Prove Yourself: 12 Essential Keys to Rise in Business and Life.

As Buff Bay Son, he gave those words rhythm, writing and executive producing the Prove Yourself Trilogy — three debut albums (Go Get ItFight, and JamaicHer). This new genre, which he calls Motivational Music, blends spoken word, reggae, and rap to inspire youth.

With JamaicHer, he sent a message back to the soil that raised him:“Jamaica gave birth to us — we must nourish Her.”

“I didn’t come up with these words,” he says. “These words flowed through me.”

He is not an artist by choice, nor an author by choice. He is a leader by choice. First he led himself. Then he led by example. Now he leads others.

In the Tradition of Poor Boys Who Proved Themselves

Like Nas, who rose from Queensbridge, New York, to become a Grammy-winning rapper, co-founder of Queensbridge Venture Partners, and owner of Mass Appeal Records and magazine, Chin understands how music can be a platform to tell the truth of growing up poor while building businesses that create wealth and opportunity.

Like Jay-Z, who grew up in Brooklyn’s Marcy Projects and turned his art into empire — serving as CEO of Def Jam Recordings, launching Roc Nation, and expanding into industries from fashion to technology — Chin knows the power of taking one’s beginnings and transforming them into global influence.

And like them, Buff Bay Son chose to use his voice and his business vision to carve a path.

A National Recognition

His story caught the attention of Jamaica’s foremost journalist, Ian Boyne, who featured him on the acclaimed television program Profile. On national TV, Boyne introduced him as:

“The Poor Bwoy from Buff Bay… a remarkable story.”

That moment crystallized what Buff Bay Son had always represented: the bridge between humble beginnings and extraordinary achievement (Watch full interview)

Why Buff Bay Son

The name was chosen deliberately — to honor his beginnings and to ensure he never forgets where he came from. Raised by Buff Bay, he carries the town in his identity so the world will always know his roots.

The Dialogue Continues

The power of Buff Bay Son is not just in who he was, but in who he continues to be. The poor boy from Portland never left — he still speaks, still pushes, still reminds Dr. Kingsley R. Chin to keep proving himself.

And through his story, he now speaks to others:

  • To the child in a one-room home.

  • To the student on a scholarship.

  • To the parent struggling to provide.

The message is the same: Prove Yourself.

A Universal Call

From Buff Bay to boardrooms, from football fields to operating rooms, from poverty to possibility — his journey is not just about one man. It is a challenge to all of us.

Because sometimes your greatest motivator is your younger self — the one who refuses to let you forget where you came from, or how far you can go.

Buff Bay Son to Dr. Kingsley R. Chin: Prove Yourself.
